Week One

 

                

                This week we did an introduction to the class and got to know each other! We also learned a bit about the NGSS and how those apply both to our future learning in this class. During the class we talked a lot about what we would have in our dream classrooms and how that relates to what is important to us! I can relate this to times in my other classes that we have talked about the same topic, but it is always interesting to me how it varies depending on what subject class we are in when it is discussed. I still am not quite sure what to make of the NGSS, but I am sure that it will be much clearer the more we talk about it in class.

    Great job with your first blog post! I thought that it was really cool to be able to design what our future classrooms might look like and to be able to share with the rest of the class. I am with you that learning about NGSS is new and am looking forward to gaining a deeper comprehension from class.

    Hi Alex! I enjoyed looking through your blog, and I think we had many similar takeaways. I am also unfamiliar with NGSS but am eager to learn more about it this semester and hopefully incorporate it into my future classroom. I also had collaborative seating in my classroom layout and a table for small group work.

Week Two

      This week in class we learned about the different characteristics of living things and how to tell if something is living or not. My group made a poster based on bees to show how each characteristic worked. We also learned a little bit about seed germination, and started the process of germinating seeds! I found the whole thing pretty clear, but I am a bit confused about the seed germination since we had a very limited amount of time to talk about it during class. I hope that we get the chance to learn more about it during our next lab. I think that a lot of what we learned this week can be applied to my future classroom! The activity of making the posters is a great way to be able to visualize and see clearly how the different characteristics work, and made us think about applying them beyond the examples that we were given in the lesson.

Week Three

      This week we talked about life cycles, and how they can be taught using NGSS standards. We did an activity during class where we formed different stages of a living being's life cycle using play doh, using it as a model to represent our learning. We then shared with the other members of our class to see what they had done. This relates back to what we have been learning throughout the entire semester about using the NGSS standards to incorporate into our lessons. What we learned in lecture about cellular respiration and photosynthesis could easily be incorporated into this lesson too, as those are the processes that allow the stages of the life cycle to continue. I could definitely see myself applying this lesson into my future classroom. It was a very helpful activity to engage in the information, and very good modeling practice, which is something that isn't done much in the classroom.
