Week Four

This week I learned about the 5 E's of modeling activities and how to apply those to the classroom. In the lesson I learned about how to apply these to a classroom example, and how they interact with students and each other in the classroom. I can apply this to my teaching in the future by using these techniques to ensure that my students get the best learning experience possible. One question that I have is if these same practices can be applied to other subjects to get a similar result.

Reflection questions:

a. What happens during the engage phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the engage phase?

In the engage phase of the lesson, the teacher asks a question to get the students started talking about the topic of the class. This connects to the function of the engage phase because it gets students interested in the topic and connects to their prior knowledge.

b. What happens during the explore phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the explore phase?

In the explore phase of the lesson, the teacher splits the students into small groups and has them look at the castes that groups of social insects separate themselves into. The teacher encourages them to use lists or graphic organizers, and asks them to discuss the information as they make their way through it. This connects to the explore phase because it allows them to discover information about the topic and allows them to apply their own skills.

c. What happens during the explain phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the explain phase?

In the explain phase of the lesson, the teacher has the students in a discussion circle to share their findings and make connections with groups who studied different insects. This connects to the explain phase because it allows students to share their findings and guides them to a deeper understanding.

d. What happens during the elaborate phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the elaborate phase?

In the elaborate phase of the lesson, the teacher has students return to their small groups and create a creative presentation to explain the information about their insect. Before they split off to create their presentations, the teacher will work with the students to develop expectations for the assignment. This connects to the elaborate phase because it helps the students challenge and deepen their understanding.

e. What happens during the evaluate phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the evaluate phase?

In the evaluate phase of the lesson, the students present and the teacher video records so they can be reviewed at a later time. This connects to the evaluate phase because it allows for the teacher to evaluate student progress.

f. Is the lesson “How do the social interactions and group behavior of ants and honey help to maintain their colonies?” a good example of a 5E lesson? Why or why not?

I believe that it is a good example of a 5E lesson because it closely follows all of the different aspects.
